Laser Metal Deposition (LMD) is an emerging technology being adopted to augment and in some cases replace traditional manufacturing of metallic parts. The LMD process utilizes a system in which metallic powder(s) contained in one or more hoppers are blown through a deposition nozzle and heated with a laser to produce a metallic bead which is then added to a substrate. The LMD technology and process will be described in detail, and the potential benefits for medical applications will be discussed as follows:

• Patient Specific Solutions — near-net shape parts and devices can be produced and tailored to meet the specific needs of individual patients because no two humans are identical.

• Porous Parts — specific to orthopedic applications, parts can be produced with controlled amounts and size of porosity, which can result in faster patient healing times and improved implant lifespan.

• Composite & Gradient Materials — As evident in industries such as aerospace, composite materials are an ever-emerging class of materials that have significant potential in the biomedical industry.
