Taking custom 3D-printed orthopedic devices to the next step by integrating customized functionality into the 3D-printed device gives developers the ability to customize not only geometry, but functionality. This means building in function from various materials that also may be specific to what the patient needs. Using a technique of 3D-printed silicone guide embedded with proteins to enable nerve regeneration has been shown to be successful in regenerating the sciatic nerve in rats.

Topics include:

  • Examining methods for interfacing high-performance functional devices with biology
  • Exploring the use of 3D printing and scanning for customized, interwoven, anatomically accurate device architectures
  • 3D printing a range of soft and nanoscale materials to enable the integration of a diverse palette of high-quality functional nanomaterials with biology
