Medical devices must satisfy a complicated regulatory maze that is entirely different from other consumer or commercial devices. Many engineers designing their first medical device hit a wall when trying to clear the regulatory compliance hurdle. Due to safety driven restrictions, medical devices require special efforts in mechanics, electronics, and software. Regulatory requirements drive the use of certain techniques in circuits and systems. This presentation will go over many of the issues that need to be designed in from the start of a new product. Emphasis here will be the circuits and system techniques that are needed to meet the regulatory requirements. If you have never designed a medical device this is a must have presentation, and if you have hit roadblocks trying to clear regulatory testing, come learn about the techniques that get it done.

Topics to be covered include:

  • IEC-60601-1 vs. IEC-61010 Devices
  • Patient Isolation Requirements and Methods
  • EMC tests used to qualify, including:
    • Conducted & Radiated Emissions
    • Power Harmonics-Flicker-Dips
    • ESD
    • RF Immunity
    • EFT Burst Immunity
    • Power Surge Immunity
    • Power Magnetic Fields
  • Circuits, systems and techniques to pass the above EMC tests will be presented
  • Coding strategies for Medical Device controllers
